Campbell Clinic’s team of specialists is trained to treat not only adult spine conditions but also pediatric spine problems. Because a child’s body is still growing, we treat conditions that affect the growing spine in a way that aims to help ensure a positive, active quality of life for the child during adolescence and adulthood. We also employ the largest team of pediatric orthopaedic surgeons in the Mid-South.
Our mission is to provide effective, safe care to children and young adults with any condition that affects the spine and to advance medical knowledge of the pediatric spine through our involvement in research and the education of students, residents and orthopaedic surgeons. The prevalence of spine disorders in children and adolescents varies widely depending on the condition, ranging from one in several hundred thousand children up to 2% to 3% of children as in idiopathic scoliosis.
In many instances, spinal deformities are mild and cause no short term activity restriction or long term risk of back-related complications. Some spinal deformities, however, can cause significant pain, neurologic compromise and significantly impair activity levels. In rare cases, severe forms of pediatric spine disease may be life-threatening and require immediate medical intervention.
The majority of pediatric spine disorders have no known risk factors. A positive family history is often present in idiopathic scoliosis suggesting a genetic influence.
We treat the following pediatric spine conditions:
